Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Jan Murphy has dedicated nearly three decades to the field of nursing. Her journey started with earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Missouri, Columbia, followed by a Master of Science in Nursing from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. Her extensive education laid a strong foundation for a successful and impactful career.
In 2021, Jan made a significant career transition by becoming a board-certified Nursing Professional Development Specialist. She moved from working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to focusing on Workplace Violence Prevention (WPV) for patients with behavioral health needs. This courageous shift was inspired by her personal experience of raising a child with Autism, which fueled her passion for enhancing care in pediatric behavioral health.
As a Clinical Education Specialist at St. Louis Children's Hospital (SLCH), Jan leads the Crisis Prevention de-escalation training program for staff. Her expertise as a Certified Instructor for Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® With Advanced Physical Skills allows her to impart valuable skills to her colleagues. Her specialty qualifications in Autism, Mental Health, and Trauma-Informed Care further enrich her contributions.
Through collaboration with the hospital’s Workplace Violence Prevention teams, Jan ensures that the principles of Crisis Prevention taught in the classroom are effectively applied in practice.
